Liga MX Weekend Recap and Week 5 Preview – Club León stormed to the top of the Torneo Clausura standings with a 2-1 win over Monarcas Morelia at the weekend. It was a result that we predicted, based on León’s technical superiority in midfield. Los Panzas Verdes were the best team in Liga MX during 2019, but silverware eluded them. León has now made a blistering start to 2020, winning three of its first four games, and it has a strong chance of success in Torneo Clausura.

Monterrey Stunned

Querétaro battled to a surprise victory over Apertura champion Monterrey. That left it second in the standings, level on points with León. Juárez, Necaxa, Guadalajara, Atlético San Luis and Atlas round out the top eight. The greatest game of the weekend saw Toluca draw 3-3 with Cruz Azul, another result we predicted due to the attacking prowess and defensive weaknesses of both teams.

Cruz Costs Tijuana

As always, there were plenty of red cards in Liga MX. León had Pedro Aquino Sánchez sent off in injury time, but it held on for victory. América full-back Jorge Eduardo Sánchez was given his marching orders after just three minutes, and that led to 3-1 defeat against Juárez. A red card for Aldo Cruz also cost Club Tijuana dearly, as it conceded a late goal and lost 2-1 away at Atlas.

Midweek Action

Liga MX fans can look forward to a busy week ahead. Puebla hosts América on Tuesday evening, and the following day Necaxa takes on Monterrey. Those teams met in the Apertura semi-finals, and Monterrey beat Necaxa home and away, so bettors might be tempted by the +120 available at 888 Sport on a Monterrey win.

Can Tigres Topple Guadalajara?

There are also plenty of big games at the weekend to get excited about. Monterrey will have little time to rest, as it must take on León on Saturday. Los Panzas Verdes will benefit from an extra few days’ rest, so a home win could be on the cards there, and the odds are generous. High-flying UNAM should be able to beat Atlético San Luis at home, while Tigres will bid to inflict a first defeat of the year upon Guadalajara.
